The Holy War

Janae surprised me with 4 tickets today for The Holy War - BYU versus Utah on November 22. It's likely that both football teams will be undefeated going into this game and the winner of the contest will go on to BCS fame and fortune....and hopefully victory. A Utah - Florida game would be especially interesting. If that happens, Jake comes home early from Ecuador. It's his dream game.

Back to the Ute - Cougar contest.... I've set up some informal, yet inflexible rules:

1. We're tailgating. I don't care if it's 45 degrees or 25 degrees - we're doing the college tailgate gig. I'm thinking of going with a real charcoal grill, and simmering whatever it is we cook for a couple of hours.
2. We're wearing red. Lots of red. Blue is for wimps.
3. We may wear indian feathers - depends on if we can find suitable headgear - we're checking eBay at this very moment.
4. We may go shirtless, and paint our chests red. We'll have to get two more guys for the 'A' and the 'H' - not too keen on our ladies having to do that.
5. Shi'ite arguments will not be tolerated. This is the... "we beat Washington, and they beat....well, they are 0 and 5, but you know the logic.
6. The goal on this predicatably chilly fall day will be simple: Annihilate BYU. The thought of this makes me tingle and I want the Utes to make a statement to the BCS brass that there are some decent football teams out west.
7. We're buying a lot of stuff with a 'U' on it.

Go Utes

No Shiite arguments will be necessary, just as they have not been for the last two years. The ghost of Harline will be there this year and Collie will still be open. You better call up your "5 pant sizes too small" buddy Kyle doesn't-know-a-Whittingham-about- winning and tell him to instruct Bryce McCain how to play D this year and when I say D I mean "don't let your man behind you on a 4th and 18". You'd think a defensive mind like tight pants Whittingham would know better than than. The U will stumble before then. They will not be undefeated before the game. You all just need to pray to the god of helmet makers that they have come up with ear holes for helmets. Otherwise, Brian "Wide Eyes" Johnson wouldn't be able to see out. BYU will put the smack down on the U this year. Write it down. Look it up. Collie is especially righteous this year and so you know what that means for you guys, unfortunately. WORD TO YOUR MOM.

Oh, and thanks for a real post. No more of that political mumbo jumbo. Nobody really cares about that stuff.

I loved the informal, yet unflexable rules! I can't really picture you out in the freezing cold though!

And the Shiite made me laugh our loud. BYU fans can talk the talk, can't they?

I think Sadie probably has some stuff that Janae could use. Red and U all over it. Have FUN!

Keith, didn't you spell Shi-ite wrong? Too many i's oh and and e? The blow-hard Andrew forgets the ending of the past 2 games. Secondly take the points and the straight up next Thursday. TCU will beat the zoo. Go Utes

Regarding Andrew the blow-hard's "forgetting" the end of the last two games, consider this:

Win by 44 and Win by 20.

Man. That was REALLY hard! Thanks for the playing though.

Now, add to that another 3 thouchdown win by BYU against UNM and BYU has only allowed 17 points in 4 consecutive games.

And BYU has not allowed a touchdown in conference play this year. How many have Utah and TCU allowed thus far? Look it up.

TCU BARELY beats CSU today. And Utah actually allowed Wyoming to score (BYU shut them out).

Know the facts before you bet anything.

Collie's still open.

"BYU shut out Wyoming, Utah didn't, so BYU should shut out Utah?"

What kind of logic do they teach at BYU??

ACR

Keith A. Runyon said...

Alec! EXACTLY!!!!!!!!! Last I checked Utah State was ranked dead last in the nation, Washington is 0-5 and UCLA is 2-4. It's true that Michigan, Air Force and Oregon State are not in the top 25, but are SIGNIFICANTLY better competition than the Coogs have played.

It's simple and I'll say this to all those interested in the Holy War: "Win 'em all and let's play on 11.22.08." I will at Rice-Eccles to see who gets BCS fame and glory (A sunny New Years Day game and $15 million) while the loser gets to play in 40 degree weather with 50 mph winds in the Pioneer - AC Delco Las Vegas Sands Bowl....and get $500 grand. Nothing like "Winner take all."

I must confess that Andrew's comments bother me greatly. I have bit my tongue for the better part of 9 months now in an attempt to steer clear of the BYU- Shi'ite (I am, of course, an anti-BYU Shi'ite) debate. Andrew has been drinking the kool-aid again (Heidi you must HIDE that stuff from him) and has called me and all Ute fans out with the always humorous "Cougar Logic."

Honor MUST be defended. I have taken verbal machete out from my safe and withdrew it from it's sheath. Stay tuned for a spirited essay.....later.

I gotta eat breakfast right now.

Heidi said...

Forget later. Let's do this now.

Alec and Keith:

One thing we do know. Toledo should DOMINATE Utah.

Keith:

Don't get your pants in a wad (like your boy Kyle). My comments bother you because they are true and it eats you. It eats you that BYU has won 16 games in a row and Utah hasn't. It eats you that BYU has won against Utah because Kyle Whittingham couldn't finish defensively two years in a row. It bothers you because I am right and you are wrong. Truth is an absolute defense.

Quoting Keith:

"Last I checked Utah State was ranked dead last in the nation, Washington is 0-5 and UCLA is 2-4. It's true that Michigan, Air Force and Oregon State are not in the top 25, but are SIGNIFICANTLY better competition than the Coogs have played."

ISN'T THIS THE VERY ARGUMENT YOU SAY BYU FANS CANNOT USE?

You are using the exact same arguments in favor of Utah that you make fun of BYU fans for making. Utah beat so and so and so and so, ERGO, they are better than BYU. I don't care who Utah beat. I don't care who BYU beat. Fact is, they are both undefeated. You cannot predict the winner of the game on November 22 based upon past opponents. Who had the tougher schedule the last two years? I bet you will argue that it was Utah. And yet, Bryce McCain can't stop Austin on 4 and 18 and your boy also known as "The Entire Utah Defense" couldn't keep their eyes on Harline. A win is a win. 16 wins in a row are 16 wins in a row. Bottom line. Look it up.

I get your argument thoug. Utah fans can use the Shiite arguments, but not BYU fans. I think that's clear now.

Like I said, us Shiites haven't had the need to make any arguments such as yours quoted above for YEARS now.

But lest we forget, here are my Shiite arguments (so you don't twist my words in your spirited essay):

1. BYU is 16 and 0 in its last 16 games. It's last lost was September 15, 2007.

2. BYU has not lost a conference game since November 19, 2005 -- no, that is not a misprint (against Utah, in OT).

3. BYU is 2-0 against Utah the last two years.

Honor must be defended, yes. Just like Collie and Harline. Why don't you start your essay with how the U will defend Max Hall, and Dennis Pitta, and Austin Collie, and Harvey Unga before we get to the defending "honor" bit.

Good luck and may the BETTER team win!!!!

Andrew

p.s. Does this mean I'm not getting one of those 4 tickets???? You know I love you man.

Keith A. Runyon said...

Nah, the BYU-Shi'ite argument ALWAYS goes like this: We (BYU) beat (or in your example shut out) Wyoming, and Utah gave up 7 points to Wyoming ergo BYU's defense is better than Utah's. It's the whole "we beat so and so, who beat so and so who beat so and so, SO we are better than (fill in the blank)." It's just stupidity squared and the fans in blue use it EVERY SINGLE DAY.

The point I was trying to make is simple and can be summed up succinctly: The competition Utah has faced has a better record than the competition BYU has played. Period. Look it up. The argument here of course can be analyzed quantitatively versus the qualitative argument Shi'ites always use.

November 22.

Alec and Tiffany said...

Boys boys boys...can't we all get along?

We can analyze the Nov. 22 game a million ways but the bottom line is that nobody can predict how Utah/BYU games turn out. One team can have a horrible record and the other a great record and the games are STILL close. Lets let the game do all the talking itself...

ACR

PS - I guess 11.22 is going to decide who is going to be teased nonstop at the beach this year! (Ojala que no sea yo! :))

We've beaten this topic to death...lets move on to something new. Presidente? Any ideas?

Keith:

I actually agree with you on the level of competition argument. No question Utah has faced, on average, better competition this year.

I never drew the conclusion that BYU's defense was better than Utah's. However, now that you mention it, BYU has not allowed a touchdown in conference play this year. In fact, they've only allowed 3 points in conference play this year. BYU has played Wyoming and New Mexico. Utah has played Wyoming, UNLV, and Air Force. Utah allowed touchdowns in every one of those games. Multiple TDs vs. UNLV (in a blow out) and vs. Air Force (in which Utah was lucky to win).

None of this matters. None of it. What matters is what happens on the field on November 22. I have a carved pumpkin on my doorstep to remind me.

Quoting Keith:

"the BYU-Shi'ite argument ALWAYS goes like this: We (BYU) beat (or in your example shut out) Wyoming, and Utah gave up 7 points to Wyoming ergo BYU's defense is better than Utah's. Uncle Keith's Shiite Argument:

"Last I checked Utah State was ranked dead last in the nation, Washington is 0-5 and UCLA is 2-4. It's true that Michigan, Air Force and Oregon State are not in the top 25, but are SIGNIFICANTLY better competition than the Coogs have played."

Andrew's Shiite Argument:

BYU: 16. The last 16 teams to play BYU: 0.

Nuff said, call Ed!

OK. That's enough angst. How about something we can agree on? How about the Eagles win yesterday? I thought they were going to blow it again. Hopefully the Giants lose tonight.

You are the man, Keith. It's fun to debate you (and win). ROFL.

Andrew,

You have diffused my anger by bringing up my beloved Eagles. The fact you like them too allows me to engage you in spirited debate. If you liked the Cowboys AND Cougars....well....let's just say you wouldn't be sitting next to me on any beach.

Like a proud papa, I saw the eagles race to a 17 to 6 lead...and then it all fell apart and we were down 23-17. I had my iphone with me in church so I followed, agonizingly, their demise....I raced home after sacrament since I wasn't teaching (it's football season, I have a special arrangement - it's true L.I.U.), and then cheered wildly as the eagles got the lead back and beat the 49ers 40-23. Whew. We needed that one. At 3-3, we're right back in the mix.

And for the Shi'ite argument...It's my blog and whatever I say goes.

And I like the pumpkin...my kid is witty. Wait 'til the other one gets home....

Heidi said...

It is your blog. That is true.

I need a blog.

We're cool. We'll never agree on BYU/Utah Football. But there is so much more we can agree on.

To wit: I just bought season tickets for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. They were my team growing up. Then I started liking BYU bball when I was there (and they were 1-30, 12-18, etc. etc.). But alas, I cannot take any more Plaisted or anything like thereunto. Ergo, I'm getting back to my UNLV roots. The Leavitts would be proud.

holy crap. what a weekend. apparently i know what andrew did all weekend. this must be why he only spent 5 minutes visiting the new baby on sunday night, so he could get back to his novel on irrelevant football sports.

3 facts i know are true:

1. byu's national championship isn't considered a national championship outside of provo;

2. utah is the only team in utah to have played and won a bcs bowl game so far;

3. neither utah nor byu will ever win a football national championship.

let's all move to texas so we can cheer for real football

Now does everyone see why I dread football season in my house every year? For my sake I hope the Cougars keep winning because BYU wins = husband in a good mood :)

And Keith, does it matter that Andrew is married to a girl who grew up in the Dallas area and a loyal Cowboys fan for years and attended Thanksgiving games in Texas Stadium? (I've since outgrown it though.)

Maybe this is why no one wants to be at the beach with us next August!

I agree Andrew needs his own blog...and Steve I would move back to Texas in a heartbeat!!

Keith A. Runyon said...

Okay, there is alot of new stuff that requires my commentary...

Steve, I agree with you 100% that BYU's 1984 team ended up being like Haley's Comet...it happens once in a lifetime. Every 76 bazillion years.

Utah has indeed won a BCS game during a very competetive period in college football. Ditto for Boise State. BYU? Not even close.
